There are some costs to consider when deciding to accept SNAP at your outlet. There is free EBT equipment available through MarketLink, but beyond the second year there will be an annual fee. You may choose to spend money on printed materials for promoting your program at the market and in the community. Lastly, if you are a farmers market, you will need to purchase SNAP tokens for your market and may need to pay a staff member to process SNAP on market day. If you are a single-vendor outlet like a farm stand, mobile market or CSA, you just need to promote your program and start accepting SNAP as payment for SNAP-eligible items.

If you are a farmers market, we recommend operating a centralized system where SNAP shoppers swipe their SNAP/EBT card at a centralized market booth and obtain tokens to spend with vendors at the market. In this case you will need to purchase SNAP tokens and booth signage before getting started. You will also need to train vendors on SNAP eligibility and have them sign a contract to acknowledge they understand how the program works. Then, get out there and promote your program in the community and start accepting SNAP.

Spread the word! At your outlet ensure you have signage letting shoppers know you accept SNAP/EBT in well trafficked areas. Promote the program in your community with flyers and posters. Build relationships with community partners that work with SNAP shoppers in your area and have them spread the word.
